Westwood, Mass. (December 1, 2009) - The Boston Breakers have announced that the team will hold an open tryout for prospective female soccer players on February 9-10, 2010 at Harvard Stadium in Allston, Mass. Head coach Tony DiCicco and members of the Breakers coaching staff will be on hand along with coaches from Breakers WPSL affiliates the Boston Aztec and Connecticut Reds. February’s tryouts will give prospective players the chance to showcase their skills and potentially earn an invitation to Breakers pre-season training camp.
“Making a WPS roster by attending an open tryout is obviously a major long shot,” said Breakers General Manager Andy Crossley. “But it can be done. If you look at our open tryout last February, we had two players come in who were overlooked in previous player selections processes – Mary-Frances Monroe and Maggie Tomecka. Both played well enough to earn training camp invites and both ultimately fought their way onto the first team roster and earned starts for us last year.”
All players interested in attending the combine must complete the 2010 Boston Breakers Tryout Registration form. Registration is $100* and payable by credit card online at breakersstuff.com. Applications must be submitted online and applicants must have a valid e-mail address. Deadline for registration is January 31, 2010.
Tuesday’s tryout will run from 8:30am – 10:30am and 12:30pm – 2:00pm and will include both tactical and technical training that will be led by the Boston Breakers coaching staff. Players must arrive game-ready (cleats, no screw-ins) and prepared to participate. Wednesday’s tryout will run the same time, but will be only open to players who receive call backs.
In order to be eligible to play in WPS in 2010, all prospective players must also register with the league and make themselves eligible for the 2010 WPS Draft by January 4th, 2010. In other words, players who are not draft-eligible on January 15th will be not be eligible to make a 2010 WPS roster. Players must be 18 or older by March 1, 2010 and have either completed or forfeited her NCAA eligibility to be eligible for the tryout.
