Keeper Alyssa Naeher Returns To States, Earns High Praise From Potsdam
NORWOOD, MA (Jan. 6, 2012) – Boston Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher recently returned from Germany, where she had tremendous success with Bundesliga club 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.
"Alyssa Naeher is a great player and person as well. She helped us a lot during her stay in Potsdam and did an excellent job," 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam Head Coach Bernd Schröder said. "She integrated very fast, and it was a big pleasure to have had her with our team. She worked and practiced very professional, and we could always trust in her and her skills. We wish her all the best for the future."
Potsdam was seeking a starting keeper after Anna Felicitas Sarholz broke her hand. The team's backup, Ann-Katrin Berger, took the starting spot, but Potsdam wanted a solid No. 2 to play behind Berger. Naeher came into the Bundesliga club in September to fill that role. But Naeher quickly found herself as the No. 1 starter when Berger went down with a thigh injury in a UEFA Women's Champions League Match on Oct. 11 against Thor/KA of Iceland. Naeher came on and played the final 26 minutes of that game to preserve the 6-0 victory.
A few days later, Naeher made her Bundesliga debut for Potsdam and earned a 3-2 win over Essen-Schönebeck. From that point on, Naeher more or less remained in the starting role and helped Potsdam sit comfortably at the top of the Bundesliga table. In seven Bundesliga matches, Naeher played 630 minutes. She also saw a full 90 minutes in a DFB-Pokal (Cup) loss to 1. FFC Frankfurt (which featured defender Ali Krieger, a former teammate of Naeher's at Penn State). In the UEFA Women's Champions League, Naeher made two appearances, starting one match (a 10-0 win over Glasgow City).
In all, Naeher played 10 matches in all competitions combined and finished with six shutouts (five in Bundesliga, one in the Champions League). Naeher concluded her stint in Germany with a 7-0 victory over Lokomotive Leipzig on Dec. 11, 2011.
